We are working hard as a Hospice to protect our patients, relatives and carers during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Our aim at St Peter’s Hospice is to continue caring for our vulnerable patients in the best possible way, and carry on providing our high standard of care during this uncertain time. Please see the following information and advice regarding our patient services and charity operations. These are continually under review in accordance with government guidelines and updated. We would like to thank you in advance for your cooperation and support during these exceptional circumstances.
Visiting the Inpatient Unit
We have made the following changes to our visiting policy on the Inpatient Unit. These are necessary changes and we apologise for any inconvenience or issues caused. Our visiting policy is now as follows:
• Two visitors per patient at one time from any household are permitted on the Unit
• Children of the patient will be allowed to visit in the company of an adult
• Visiting time is from 11am-7pm
• Please do not bring flowers in to the Inpatient Unit
• Before visiting for the first time we ask that visitors please call to confirm arrangements with the nurse in charge, who can explain how to access the building and collect Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• You will be asked screening questions (this will include questions about any recent international travel). This is very important, as we are asking that you confirm that you do not have any symptoms of COVID-19 and that you have not been in contact with another person who is symptomatic of COVID-19. You will be asked to provide your name and contact details as part of the Test and Trace service.
Whilst visiting you will be asked to wear Personal Protective Equipment. Where practicable we would ask visitors to provide their own face mask or covering. If you unable to provide this type of PPE on arrival you will be issued with the appropriate PPE. This must be worn for the whole time you are in the building. Our staff will supervise and support you in using this safely. You will also be asked to wash your hands on arrival and before leaving, for at least 20 seconds using soap and water.
When a patient is dying we know time is precious. We will do everything we can to support visiting when patients are nearing the end of their life. The nurse in charge will reassess visiting with the patient and those closest to them.
Please contact the Inpatient Unit on 0117 9159431 should you wish to discuss anything related to this guidance. Visiting times may be subject to change or be suspended at times in response to local or national instruction.
Hospice staff visiting in your own home
We will contact, by phone, any patients or family member prior to any of our staff visiting in the community. If a visit has been arranged our staff will ask specific screening questions about COVID-19. When a visit has been arranged please be aware that our staff will be fully equipped with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the care they need to provide. They will wear this on arrival and throughout their visit.
At the end of the staff members visit or shift their PPE will be double bagged and left with a tag to indicate the date it can be disposed of with normal household waste.
Hospice at Home shifts:
• In addition to the information above our Hospice at Home team will take regular breaks where they can remove their PPE. This maybe in a separate room, garden or even sit in their car for a short period
• We ask that only one member of the household is present when our staff member is caring for your loved one. When a patient is dying the nurse will assess and facilitate the important people being together with the patient.
All Visitors to the Hospice
At St Peter's Hospice we take infection, prevention and control seriously to protect our patients, staff, volunteers and visitors. We request that all contractors, relatives and friends consider carefully if they have COVID-19 symptoms or may have been exposed to someone who has and in either case not to visit the Hospice.
Our main reception is open during the week from 8am to 5pm, but closed at weekends and on Bank Holidays.
You will not be able to enter the Hospice premises at Brentry if:
• You or anyone in your household has any of the following
- high temperature
- new and continuous cough
- loss or change to your normal sense of smell or taste (anosmia)
• If you have travelled internationally in the last 14 days from a country that requires you to quarantine, unless your visit falls under one of the exemption rules
Or if you have any of the following:
• Respiratory infection
• Flu like symptoms
If you have been contacted by NHS Test & Trace Service (England) or NHS Test, Trace & Protect (in Wales) you MUST adhere to the advice that has been given to you.
For advice please go to the NHS website to check your symptoms and follow the medical advice. Only call NHS 111 if you cannot get online or your symptoms worsen.
Whilst on the Brentry site you will be asked to adhere to Infection Prevention and Control procedures. There are handwashing and sanitising gel stations within the building, we ask all visitors to use these regularly.
The coffee shop is closed to the general public.

Safety is our absolute priority, so we’ve adapted our events calendar. Many of our regular Hospice events are being held virtually rather than as large events. Others will have extra safety measures, and some community events have been cancelled. We will keep reviewing and updating all events regularly and keep participants updated, and all of our event pages will be kept up to date with the most current information.
